Working together to
close the gap

Data Zoo fosters a culture of growth to help build future leaders. We're working
with remote schools to empower students through technology as a tool.

AMBITION

Promote a learning environment that
fosters positive interaction and
engagement through technology

With enrolment and attendance as a significant concern, education is one key area in which Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander disadvantage persists. Primary and secondary school education is essential for children's cognitive and social development, and it has a strong association with employability, income, health and control over one's life.

PROGRESS

Building future leaders

Data Zoo sees technology as a tool for the future and an additional way for students to
express their learning.

The goal

Technology as a tool - The first goal together is to ensure that every student and teacher can access a device whenever they need them.

Working with the kids - The second goal together is to set up lessons which interweaves cultural content with digital literacy skills, where our staff can teach and interact with the kids.

The results

At the start of 2021, Data Zoo and Woorabinda State School began working together to help 'close the gap'. Located in rural Queensland, Australia, the town of Woorabinda is on the traditional lands of the Wadja Wadja/Wadjigal and Ghungalu people. As one of Australia's most culturally diverse communities, they have 52+ nations living in the community.

To support the children and their development throughout their primary school years, we donated 30 laptops. Unfortunately, the school is the only place where the kids use computers since they don't have access to one at home. These 30 laptops meant that each class had access to the laptops whenever needed, including 4 team members from Data Zoo teaching lessons each week. As a result, the school has recently seen success with student engagement and enrollment due to technology and STEM lessons.
