What is CCPA?

The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) is a landmark data privacy law that introduced new rights for California residents. The law provides residents with several privacy protections, including the right to access and delete personal information collected from them, opt-out of the sale of their personal information and the right to non-discrimination for exercising their CCPA rights.

Any business in California or around the world that collects and processes California residents’ personal information and meets certain thresholds, including revenue and volume of data processing, must comply with the CCPA. In addition, companies must provide clear information to consumers about how they use their data and give consumers more control over how or if this data is shared.

Why does CCPA matter?

The CCPA is the first of its kind in the United States. The goal is to give consumers more transparency and control over how their data, including credit card numbers, social security, age, and date of birth, is collected, stored, and used by certain businesses.

In the United States, businesses have historically been able to collect personal information without express consent. While companies were required to safeguard customer data, entities were not held responsible for how they used or shared this data. The United States is yet to pass a similar law at a federal level, but experts believe the CCPA will drive future regulations in other states. California is paving the way for a rights-based approach that enables individuals to own their personal information. In 2023, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah, and Virginia will follow California’s lead and begin enforcing their own data privacy laws.

How does Data Zoo’s CCPA compliance benefit my business?

Data privacy is becoming increasingly top of mind for global consumers, and customers are placing higher value on companies that can effectively fulfill their expectations. While your business may become CCPA compliant for your California customers, the steps you take to achieve this will allow you to boast robust security and privacy practices to your customers in states and countries outside California.

Many organisations fail to properly assess the data security measures in their supply chain, putting both their business and customers at risk from potential data breaches. Therefore, it is essential to select the right partner. Data Zoo has undergone a rigorous independent third-party audit against the CCPA requirements. This means we have taken the necessary steps to ensure our policies and procedures adhere to the highest level of data protection to safeguard personal data from data breaches.

As more states introduce legislation similar to CCPA, it is imperative that businesses must shift their perspective on data privacy from solely a risk management tool to a strategic advantage. Compliance is a key business differentiator that allows you to provide quality services to your customers while future-proofing your processes and ensuring you can quickly scale.
